For information (POWs, politically-motivated kidnappings, etc.)
By a serial killer or sadistic individual
While living with a violent cult, family, or other group
By a terror group, including “pack mentality” peers who embrace sadistic bullying
Following an accusation of political or religious crimes
For being in the ethnic or religious minority
As a captured journalist
Because of one's work as a human rights defender or health professional in a volatile country
By members of an opposing criminal group (e.g., the mafia)
