HELPFUL TIP:

Settings should always be chosen with care. Consider the emotion you want your viewpoint character to feel and how setting choices, weather elements, and symbolism might build a specific mood in the scene, create tension and conflict, or even raise the stakes.
SIGHTS:
Cracked pavement with weeds and grass growing through it
Tufts of dead grass choked with litter (chocolate bar wrappers, takeout containers, straws, balled-up napkins, cigarette butts)
A bag of trash half-hidden in the weeds
Broken glass
A scattering of bricks or broken curb pieces
Flattened cardboard and discarded plywood strewn about
A sun-faded realty sign
Graffiti sprayed on the walls of nearby buildings
Gravel and dirt
Hardy dandelions adding dabs of yellow beauty
An old rubber bike tire twisted into a figure eight
Sagging or broken fencing
Stunted trees or bushes
Discarded hair ties
Pen lids and gum wrappers near a sewer grate
Potholes filled with water after a rainstorm
An old shirt plastered to the ground in a dirty heap
