CHOOSE MY PLANHELPFUL TIP:
To understand why your character is driven toward a certain goal, get to know their positive and negative traits, as well as any significant emotional wounds that might be motivating them. Then you can explore the various kinds of conflict that could block them as they move toward their goal.
NOTES:
FORMS THIS MIGHT TAKE:
HUMAN NEED DRIVING THE GOAL (INNER MOTIVATION):
Esteem and Recognition: A character may pursue this goal if they feel unworthy and they believe that the enemy group has something that can alleviate that lack of value. For example, if the character believes that power or wealth will fill a void in their life, they may try to achieve it by destroying the group of people and taking their possessions.
Love and Belonging: If a character who lacks belonging is suddenly embraced wholeheartedly by a group of people, he could easily be drawn into their way of thinking, even if contradicts his own moral beliefs. He may abandon his own sense of right and wrong to embrace the ideals of the group, which could lead him to do unconscionable things in an effort to be accepted.
Safety and Security: This level of hatred is often driven by an intense fear of the enemy that may or may not be misplaced—fear that the people must be destroyed before they can destroy the character, fear that the group's values will destroy his own people's ideals, etc. If the character believes that the enemy's existence is a threat to their own safety or that of their loved ones, they may seek to eliminate that group altogether.
Physiological Needs: This goal could be adopted (and has been throughout history) if the character's existence is being physically threatened by others. In this case, he or she may believe that the only way to ensure their own survival is to eliminate the other people group.
